How to Start Going to the Gym When You're Completely Out of Shape

Thinking about joining a gym but worried you’re too unfit to start?

You don’t need to get fit before joining a gym.

Getting fit is why you’re going.

And starting is much easier than you might think.

Nervous About Going to the Gym?

That’s completely normal.

You might worry that everyone else will be fitter than you, that you won’t know how to use the equipment or that people will be watching you.

The reality?

Everyone had a first day.

Start small. Have a look around the gym, ask for an induction and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

At Maxx Life, you can even book a free gym tour before joining so you know exactly what to expect.

What Should I Do on My First Day?

Keep it simple.

Your first workout doesn’t need to leave you exhausted.

Try:

5–10 mins easy walking or cycling

20–30 mins trying a few resistance machines

5–10 mins easy cardio to finish

That’s it.

Your first few visits are about getting comfortable and building confidence, not having the world’s greatest workout.

How Often Should a Beginner Go To The Gym?

You don’t need to suddenly start training five days a week.

For many beginners, 2–3 gym sessions per week is a great place to start.

More importantly, choose something you can realistically maintain.

Two workouts every week for six months beats five workouts for two weeks.

What If I Don't Know What I'm Doing?

This is probably the biggest concern we hear from beginners.

You aren’t expected to know.

That’s why Maxx Life offers different levels of support to help you get started:

🏋️ Gym inductions
📱 Workout programmes
💬 Fitness consultations
🤝 Mentored Coaching
💪 Personal Training

You can have as much — or as little — help as you need.

What If I'm Really Unfit?

Start from where you are now.

If five minutes on the treadmill is challenging, start with five minutes.

If you need to use the lightest weight on a machine, use it.

Don’t compare your starting point with somebody else’s progress.

Over time, five minutes becomes ten. Weights get a little heavier. Exercises feel easier.

That’s progress.

The Secret? Don't Rely on Motivation

Motivation is great when you have it. But it won’t always be there.

Instead, try to build a routine.

Choose two or three days each week when you’re going to exercise and make those sessions part of your normal schedule.

And if you miss one?

Don’t give up. Just go again.

Still Nervous? Don't Join Yet.
